McDowell County Tourism Data: What Visitors Spend, Not What Hosts Earn

Rocky creek feeding Lake James in McDowell County

Visitor-spend dollars are what guests spend in the destination, not what hosts earn. Visit North Carolina's 2025 County Level Visitor Expenditures table, posted August 2026, prints McDowell County at $109.60 million in total visitor spending. That figure is county destination spend. It is not a Lake James listing's year. It is not a nightly rate. It is not a reason to raise the weekend. Ask what $109.60 million measures before you put it in a pitch deck, a lender memo, or a listing.

The same PDF is the only county row this page will use. Figures are in millions of dollars. McDowell's 2025 line is lodging $23.77, food and beverage $32.32, recreation $14.03, retail $8.46, and transport $31.01. Spending growth versus 2024 is 0.7 percent. Employment printed on that row is 648 jobs. McDowell's share of statewide spend is 0.3 percent. Statewide context is one sentence: NC Commerce and the Governor's May 7, 2026 release put 2025 statewide visitor spending at $37.2 billion, up 1.3 percent. That number is statewide. It is not McDowell's number.

The market report is the lodging-marketplace file. This page is the destination file. Keep them in different folders. The complete visitor's guide is the itinerary a guest actually reads. The shoulder post is the host calendar. Tourism data is the label on the spend. Use the label. A host who pastes $109.60 million into a nightly rate has already mixed desks. Cite the PDF, cite the year, and keep the lodging file in a different sentence from the county row. Destination spend is a pile. A host year is a house. Do not put those objects in one cell.

What McDowell County's $109.60 million measures

McDowell's $109.60 million measures 2025 visitor spending in McDowell County as Visit North Carolina and Tourism Economics define that spend. Lodging can sit inside it, and the PDF notes that lodging includes second-home spending. Food can sit inside it. Recreation, retail, and transportation can sit inside it. Transport includes ground and air travel. A night on Lake James, a plate in Marion, a swim-beach day at Paddy's Creek, and a tank of gas on I-40 can sit inside it. Your specific listing may sit inside it and still be a rounding error.

It does not measure occupancy on a short-term rental file. It does not measure a nightly rate. It does not measure a median month. It does not measure August, June, or October as host peaks. A destination can still see visitors in a month when a typical lake house sits soft. Destination spend is a pile. A host trailing-twelve is a house. Those two objects do not share a cell. If a pitch deck divides $109.60 million by a vendor listing count, the deck is wrong.

It also does not measure Burke County, Rutherford County, Buncombe County, or a fake Lake James metro. McDowell's row is McDowell. Print it as McDowell. If a shoreline pin sits in Burke, open Burke's own row from the same PDF. Do not blend the two counties into one made-up basin total. Do not paste a recovery story from another county onto this water. The measurement rule is the whole job of this page. Print McDowell's row as McDowell. Print Burke's row as Burke. Stop before the slide invents a third geography.

The 2025 row this draft opened

This page opened the Visit NC 2025 County Level Visitor Expenditures PDF dated in the August 2026 post. Dollar figures in the table are millions except tax savings per resident. McDowell's total spending cell is $109.60 million. Lodging is $23.77 million. Food and beverage is $32.32 million. Recreation is $14.03 million. Retail is $8.46 million. Transport is $31.01 million. Year-over-year spending growth is 0.7 percent. Employment is 648. Share of state spend is 0.3 percent. Share of state jobs is 0.3 percent.

The same row prints personal income at $28.03 million, state taxes at $3.87 million, local taxes at $4.07 million, and tax savings per resident at $204.72. Those are destination-economy cells. They are not a host remittance. They are not Destination McDowell's 6 percent occupancy tax collected on a single stay. They are not proof a 3-bed dock house will book a Tuesday in February. Cite the PDF. Cite the year. Do not back-date 2025 onto an older brochure.

If a later county file revises the row, date the revision and update this page. Until then, prefer the PDF you can still click. Do not midpoint a blogger's older McDowell figure against this table. Do not invent a 2026 county update this draft did not open. Provenance is the section. Arithmetic is not, if the arithmetic is a divide-by-listings trick that turns destination spend into a fake nightly rate. A later PDF can revise the row. This draft will not invent that revision. Prefer the table you can still click over a blogger's older McDowell figure.

Burke has its own row. Do not invent a Lake James MSA.

The lake straddles McDowell and Burke. That is a parcel fact. It is not permission to blend two county rows. Burke's 2025 line in the same PDF is $162.88 million in total visitor spending, up 5.6 percent versus 2024, with 970 jobs and a 0.4 percent share of state spend. Lodging is $40.27 million. Food and beverage is $57.10 million. Recreation is $21.72 million. Retail is $12.44 million. Transport is $31.35 million. Print Burke's row when the pin is Burke. Stop.

Do not add McDowell and Burke together and call the sum Lake James. There is no Lake James MSA on this table. There is no Nebo row. Nebo is an unincorporated McDowell hamlet. A guest who slept on the Burke shore and bought dinner in Marion may sit inside two models. That guest did not turn your dock into a combined $272 million story. Write the county on the tax card. Then open that county's row.

Morganton NC is the Burke-side grocery and dinner town. Marion NC is the McDowell-side grocery and dinner town. Morganton NC is not Morganton GA. Those towns are where food-and-beverage cells can happen. They are not a second tourism cluster and not a reason to paste Burke's 5.6 percent growth onto a McDowell listing. Keep the rows labeled. Keep the pin honest. A Burke shoreline house does not inherit McDowell's 0.7 percent, and a McDowell dock does not inherit Burke's 5.6 percent.

Statewide $37.2 billion is one sentence of context

NC Commerce and the Governor's May 7, 2026 release put 2025 statewide visitor spending at $37.2 billion, a record, up 1.3 percent versus 2024. The county PDF's state total line prints $37,224.42 million, 230,997 tourism jobs, $1.39 billion in state taxes, and $1.33 billion in local taxes. Use that package as statewide context. One or two sentences. Then return to McDowell.

Statewide is not McDowell. McDowell's share of state spend is 0.3 percent. A host who writes "North Carolina tourism is $37.2 billion, so this lake is on fire" has already left the row. A host who writes "McDowell is $109.60 million, so my house earned a share" has already left the measurement rule. Statewide context explains that North Carolina has a visitor economy. It does not price a Friday on N.C. 126.

Do not put the statewide total in a listing headline. Do not put it next to a dock photograph as if the house collected it. Demand context is allowed. Inheritance of the whole pie is not. If a later Commerce release revises $37.2 billion, date the revision. Until then, keep the May 7, 2026 sentence intact and keep it statewide. One sentence of context is enough. A headline that leads with the state total is already the wrong desk.

Destination McDowell, 6 percent occupancy, and Old Fort

Destination McDowell is the county tourism development authority. Occupancy tax on the McDowell side is 6 percent, remitted to McDowell County Finance. The TDA is the 1985 / 2007 session-law body that spends the promotion share and runs a visitor center in Old Fort. You may describe what the TDA funds. You may not treat TDA collections as a host's top-line. Occupancy tax is an invoice line on a stay. $109.60 million is a destination pile. Different desks. Different documents.

Burke is authorized in session law at a combined 6 percent occupancy-tax structure. Confirm the levied rate and the remittance form with Burke Finance if the parcel is Burke. Both counties sit on North Carolina sales tax on accommodations through NCDOR. Occupancy tax is not sales tax. Neither tax is a host license. The regulation post is that fork. This section only needs the TDA sentence: 6 percent on the McDowell stay, visitor center in Old Fort, promotion share is not your rent roll.

A listing that puts "supports 648 jobs" in the amenity list is confused. A lender memo that uses $4.07 million in local taxes as coverage is confused. Jobs and tax belong in a community or tourism paragraph with the Visit NC label left on. They do not belong in a pro forma cell. Coverage is a house question. Employment is a county question. Keep $109.60 million in the tourism paragraph. Keep the remittance calendar in the clerk folder. A 6 percent invoice on one stay is not the county pile and not proof the next Saturday will book.

Park, trail, and downtown are where the spend happens

Close the spend to the places a guest can actually use. Lake James State Park at Paddy's Creek and Catawba River Access is the free day-use backbone, with swim passes and rentals as the paid exceptions — confirm fees on the park page. Fonta Flora is the lake-level trail. Shortoff is the gorge day. Marion NC and Morganton NC are grocery and dinner. Old Fort holds the visitor center. Those nouns are how lodging, food, recreation, and transport cells get spent. They are not a listing trailing-twelve.

The complete visitor's guide writes the three-day spine. The shoulder post writes April, May, and September against a park clock that does not open the swim beach until May 1. Use $109.60 million as demand context labeled as 2025 McDowell visitor spending. Use the park page as the Saturday. Do not let the larger number bully a dark January off the calendar. A county can print a year total and still have a lake house that sits in February.

Do not convert a park day into a booked night. Do not convert a Fonta Flora bridge photograph into a recreation-cell claim for one address. Do not convert Old Fort's visitor center into proof your dock will fill. A busy trailhead is a park sentence. A busy Saturday in Marion is a downtown sentence. Neither sentence is your occupancy. Point the guest at the itinerary. Point the host at the lodging file. Keep the PDF in the tourism folder. A busy Paddy's Creek Saturday is demand context. It is not a trailing-twelve for the house across the cove.

What this page will not paste

We will not paste Rutherford County numbers onto this lake. We will not paste Lake Lure recovery copy onto this lake. We will not paste Buncombe or Asheville spend onto a Nebo pin. We will not paste Helene as a Lake Lure or Asheville story. If Helene appears at all, use a McDowell-primary source — park alerts, a county recovery page — and stay on this county. East Wimba Trail's long-term closure is a park fact. It is not a destination-spend rewrite.

We will not pair $109.60 million with a host year, a median month, or a nightly rate in the same sentence. We will not pair it with those figures in a question. We will not invent a Lake James MSA. We will not blend McDowell and Burke. We will not treat Destination McDowell's 6 percent collections as top-line rent. We will not treat AirROI's Low licensed label as an ordinance. We will not send a tourism page to Chimney Rock. We will not send it to a movie lake.

Forbidden live slugs stay forbidden. The Lake Lure recovery page and the Lake Lure visitor-spend page are a different cluster. Do not rewrite them. Do not hyphenate Lake James onto Lake Lure to borrow their dollars. One lake. One county row at a time. Statewide $37.2 billion stays statewide. McDowell $109.60 million stays McDowell. A house stays a house. Do not borrow another county's recovery to make this row look larger than 0.7 percent growth.

How a host should use this file

Use this file to answer a deck that already waved a tourism total. Cite the PDF. Cite 2025. Cite $109.60 million as McDowell visitor spending. Cite the split if the slide needs lodging versus food versus recreation. Then say what the figure does not measure. Send the underwriting question to the market report. Send the guest to the complete visitor's guide. Send the calendar to the shoulder post.

Do not underwrite a listing from a tourism PDF. Do not raise August because the county printed 0.7 percent growth. Do not cut January because a destination year looks large. Growth of 0.7 percent is a county row. It is not a booking. A 3-bed dock house still needs a slip, a first frame that matches the month, and a cleaner who will take the turn. Those facts live on other pages in this cluster.

Print McDowell's row the week you reuse this draft. Snapshots move. A 2024 blogger figure is not this table. A statewide headline is not this county. A neighbor county's recovery is not this lake. Visitor-spend dollars are what guests spend in McDowell. They are not what hosts earn on Lake James. That is the only tourism sentence this file will support. Facts lock August 16, 2026. Recheck the Visit NC county PDF the week you open a deck. If the row has moved, print the new McDowell line and leave every other county where you found it. Do not underwrite a dock from a tourism PDF. Send that question to the market report.

Can I add McDowell and Burke together for Lake James?

There is no Lake James MSA on the county table. Burke's own 2025 row is $162.88 million, up 5.6 percent, with 970 jobs. Print Burke when the pin is Burke. Print McDowell when the pin is McDowell. Do not blend the two counties into a fake basin total. Burke's 2025 line in the same PDF is $162.88 million in total visitor spending, up 5.6 percent versus 2024, with 970 jobs and a 0.4 percent share of state spend.

Does Destination McDowell's 6 percent occupancy tax equal visitor spend?

Occupancy tax is 6 percent remitted to McDowell County Finance. The TDA spends the promotion share and runs a visitor center in Old Fort. That invoice line is not $109.60 million and not a host top-line. Occupancy tax is not sales tax. Neither tax is a host license. Confirm Burke's levied rate if the parcel is Burke.

Can I use this figure in a listing or a lender memo?

Use it as labeled demand context: 2025 McDowell visitor spending. Do not put it in a headline. Do not divide it by a listing count. Do not treat it as coverage. Do not pair it with a host year or a nightly rate. Send underwriting to the market report. Send the guest to the visitor guide.

Why not use Rutherford or Lake Lure tourism numbers?

Those are a different county and a locked cluster. This page will not paste Rutherford recovery copy or Lake Lure visitor-spend copy onto Lake James. It will not paste Buncombe or Asheville spend onto a Nebo pin. If Helene appears, use a McDowell-primary source and stay on this county. If Helene appears at all, use a McDowell-primary source — park alerts, a county recovery page — and stay on this county.

Do park days equal booked nights?

Lake James State Park, Fonta Flora, Shortoff, and a Marion or Morganton dinner are how lodging, food, and recreation cells get spent. They are not a listing trailing-twelve. A busy trailhead is a park sentence. Point the guest at the three-day guide. Keep the PDF in the tourism folder. Those nouns are how lodging, food, recreation, and transport cells get spent.

What this page will not paste?

Visitor-spend dollars are what guests spend in the destination, not what hosts earn. Visitor-spend dollars are what guests spend in McDowell. They are not what hosts earn on Lake James. The Lake Lure recovery page and the Lake Lure visitor-spend page are a different cluster. We will not paste Lake Lure recovery copy onto this lake.

How a host should use this file?

The same PDF is the only county row this page will use. That is the only tourism sentence this file will support. Use this file to answer a deck that already waved a tourism total. We will not pair $109.60 million with a host year, a median month, or a nightly rate in the same sentence.
